HEROIC ROSES

Housed in Dusseldorf’s Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, this 1938 composition presents the forms of the branch and spiral that Klee would use frequently towards the end of his career, as he felt they constituted the basic building blocks of growth. These ‘heroic roses’ are formed with intense energy, as the bold spirals and intersecting branches convey the sense of heroism effected by the flowers. However, signalling once again his dry humour, the shapes and forkings also take on amusing and surprising other forms, suggesting an array of possibilities in a canvas, which, at first sight, appears a purely abstract composition.
